I've never even heard of someone being arrested for criminal libel except for something involving Oscar Wilde, and that's well over 100 years old and in another country.
Still, if he's been arrested on a defamatory libel case it means that he will have to defend himself by proving that his comments were not falsified, I would think, as in produce evidence that the allegations he posted are correct. Given he's facing multiple charges as well as obstruction it'll be interesting to see if he does produce anything or if it truly was defamatory libel, although I have a feeling he doesn't have anything solid except hearsay and rhetoric. While I'm not exactly a fan of the Calgary Police Force (like other services, they've been hit by the strain of a rapidly growing city and it shows, hopefully I don't offend anyone) it doesn't mean I go out of my way to publish possibly erroneous charges and beliefs as fact.
He's out on a thousand dollar bail right now with a restriction on his internet privileges. This reminds me about some recent discussions about the media getting away with making untrue comments without publishing apologies or, indeed, correcting themselves, and it sounds like this cop critic pushed the line hard enough that the Calgary Police were willing to turn around and involve the RCMP. I find it pretty hard to believe they would willingly bring in the RCMP unless they had a strong case to the contrary of Mr. Kelly's stance, who's postings are still up, apparently. You can see the postings believed to be defamatory and libel
