It's a private apartment complex, not social housing. If the landlord isn't doing anything illegal then too bad.

The building is owned by Gordon Nelson Investments, and tenants say that since the company bought the building two years ago, it's tried various ways to evict tenants, including an attempt to raise the rent by 73 per cent.

That bid was turned down in court.

Yep, many landlords will try to get around the residential tennancy act by evicting people, making very minor renovations that could have been done while the tennant remained in the apt and then jacking up the rent.

But hey, let the free market reign. If people can't afford a huge rent increase, there's plenty of cardboard boxes still up for grabs. Ain't capitalism grand.

Tenants in Vancouver and New Westminster are complaining that they're being unfairly evicted so that landlords can raise their rents, and they're calling on the provincial government to do more to protect them.

If they're hoping that the Campbell Government will come to their aid they're gonna be majorly dissapointed.

The only way they'll get Government help is if they band together, become a corporation and make an under the table deal with Gordo and the Boy's.
