[sarcasm]

How can you be so heartless, you monster? What did those cute baby seals ever do to you?

[/sarcasm]

Seriously, I argued with a woman in Ottawa about why we should keep the seal hunt for economic, cultural and stability questions. I even told her how the population has been steadily increasing since the 70's, and she tried to tell me that it was still below their original population numbers. I decided to remind her that with the lack of fish in the Atlantic, that would make food/fish problems even WORSE than they are now and I'd rather help my fellow Canadians on the east coast than some stupid cute seals in the Atlantic.

These bleeding hearts really need to wake up and look past the cute veneer of the seals and think about what's best for everyone involved, which happens to be a seal hunt. It's not like we're hunting them to extinction or anything.

Bingo.

At least we don't torture and torment creatures before killing it.

It's the out-dated imagery of past culling practices that have gotten these dolt's panties all up in a wad. Dumb asses like Paul McCartney and Pam Anderson leading the charge against the hunt isn't helping either.

The worst part most of these anti-seal hunting dongs probably love their veal parmesan.

Most eggs we consume are unfertilized.. Chinese and other Asians eat developed fetuses of chicken and ducks...bones and feathers and beaks.

Someone explain to me why they don't just shoot them?

It's the method of the hunt that's always the controversy in this debate, rather than the existence of it. If they shot them rather than clubbing, the issue would dissolve.

Is there some reason they can't?

A shot seal can slip into the water injured meaning it just cost money to kill that seal.

Just smash the skull with a stick and poke the eye-ball with your finger to make sure it's dead like your dad did before you.

$1:
Firearms are difficult to master and require a steady aim on moving creatures at a distance. No matter how skilled a marksman the sealer may be, there is always a margin for error and any sealer who has used a gun in the hunt will admit to missing their mark a few times a year. This could cause unwanted suffering in the time it takes to deliver a successful kill shot to the cranium of the seal, not to mention the skill and time it takes to compensate for the floating and swelling of the vessel under the waves and hitting against the ice. The hakapik is a fail safe weapon for killing seals. The seal is harvested up close, and the sealer can immediately render the animal irreversibly unconscious with very little margin for error.

It also has to be a safety concern, at least it would be to me. How would you like to be around a bunch of Newfie seal hunters packing firearms.... 8O 8O
