$1:
One kite flier called the ban "a slap in the face to every Afghan."

yup, another good Canadian

$1:
His club has four people designated to clean up any leftover string or kites on park grounds, but acknowledged that some garbage may have been missed after it got dark.

Too late Jacko.

Why in hell would anyone even use metal string or string coated in broken glass? It's fucking idiotic.

For kite fighting. The object is to cut the line of your opponent. And yes it is fucking idiotic.

Another pleasant childhood pastime ruined by hostile adults. We should just turn the entire world over to the guys from 'Jackass' and the juggalos and get it over with already.

Quite popular in Pakistan, and apparently Afghanistan as well.

I'm sure the littering issue had gone on sometime already. Why do you need a designated crew to pick it up? Whoever owns it should be doing it. That said, I see a lot of Tims coffee cups on parks, maybe they should ban Coffee in parks...I mean isn't the reasoning for banning the kites the same? Litter?

It's not that it's just litter, it's that it's a fine line that gets wrapped around wildlife, similar to the 6 packs holders, plus those strings are essentially sharp objects. Some have shards of glass on them.
What the city SHOULD do instead of banning all kite flying in that one park, cuz sure as shit the kite fighters will just move to another park and kite flying in general will just get banned city wide, is to designate a kite fighting park. Heck, even charge a fee to cover the cost of clean up if the idiots don't wanna clean up their broken lines themselves. And hand out exhorbitant fines to those that kite fight somewhere besides a designated area.

I thought I heard they were not using hte glass twine here. Either way, true enough, the twine is more an issue for wild life than Tims cups.

That is unless they drink any left overs

If they had cleaned up after themselves properly, this wouldn't have happened. They have no one to blame but their own members.
