Well done to the big "O", not only did your Government conspire to release a piece of human offal that should have been exterminated at inception, you then attempted to blackmail another Government to keep this sordid secret quiet.

With antics like this it wont' be long before we're discussing this Government in the same breath as the Chretien crowd when it comes to providing sympathy and assistance to known terrorists.

Sorry Zip, but I did read the whole article and you must have forgot to put in the rest of Mr. Lebarons Letter to the Scottish Gov't, which, knowing you must have been an oversight.

The note added: "Nevertheless, if Scottish authorities come to the conclusion that Megrahi must be released from Scottish custody, the US position is that conditional release on compassionate grounds would be a far preferable alternative to prisoner transfer, which we strongly oppose."

Mr LeBaron added that freeing the bomber and making him live in Scotland "would mitigate a number of the strong concerns we have expressed with regard to Megrahi's release".

This doesn't sound like they "backed" his release. They wanted him to stay in jail. But given that it was not their decision to make, they asked that he at least be forced to remain in Scotland, and not be returned to Libya.

I don't get any sense of approval by the U.S. at all.
