Really? I was told several years ago that HPV doesn't affect males, that we are only carriers of the virus.
Not saying you're wrong, just wondering when it was determined that men can be affected by it as well.

Talking about male variety of "female" cancers, I read in a paper that in the UK, the youngest male breast cancer patient is diagnosed. He's in his 20's. I forgot whether he was 22 or 28.

Well yes it does.. HPV causes venerial warts......Genital warts, also known as venereal warts or condylomata acuminata, are one of the most common types of sexually transmitted diseases.

As the name suggests, genital warts affect the moist tissues of the genital area. They may look like small, flesh-colored bumps or have a cauliflower-like appearance. Genital warts may be very small, or they may multiply into large clusters.

Although genital warts can be treated with medications and surgery, they are a serious health concern. The virus that causes genital warts — the human papillomavirus (HPV) — has been associated with cervical cancer. It has also been linked with other types of genital cancers. Men are affected with cancer of the penis, scrotum, testicles and as in this article the throat.

You were misinformed. I've actually seen a couple documentary pieces on this in the past couple years, and yes - men can most certainly contract it. It can cause throat and mouth cancer, as well as anal cancer for bisexual men.

Merck, the maker of Gardasil, seemed more interested a couple of years ago. In 2008 it funded Maura Gillison, the Ohio State University researcher who established the HPV-throat-cancer link in 2000, to do a pilot study to show that test could reliably detect HPV infection in the throat. The pilot study was successful. By early 2009 Gillison says that a larger study of the vaccine in throat cancer looked close to being green lit.

But after Merck agreed to buy rival Schering-Plough for $41 billion in March 2009, interest in a big study seemed to evaporate, Gillison says. In a statement, Merck says that "due to competing research and business priorities, we decided not to move ahead with an efficacy study at this time."

That really ticks me off. They know they've found something (a big something!), but because of a business transaction, it's swept under the carpet. In the mean time, how many tens of thousands of new cases will emerge?

There is ongoing research into the effects of HPV on both men and women. Protection of one leads to protection of the other. If as you say men are carriers then there is an issue there. If a guy is protected by vaccination then he would be immuned to getting it. Personally I think both men and women should be given it and that includes teens.

Agreed. Both genders should get the vaccine early on, before they're sexually active (so in this day and age, I'm guessing what? Eight?). We have the technology, why on earth not use it?
