Hope he can continue, for his sake.

And ours.

$1:
Retired Maj.-Gen. Lewis MacKenzie, with more field command than most, has noted that Semrau’s “judgment call” in the heat of battle, was “appropriate.”

Good for him. The Army would be a fool to lose this guy.

Glad to hear he was found "not guilty". Just to be the cynical guy that I am, I would be interested to see the results had he been a private. In the CF, the shit (and blame) usually rolls down to lowest level.

Hate to say, but offing the Taliban in the field is SOP anymore. The creeps learned that if they're taken alive to whine that someone violated their rights as a means of demoralizing the military. Consequently the troops in the field have the choice of shooting the Tallywackers during battle or taking the risk to their reputation and career of securing them and bringing them in. Not much of a choice to me.

That's the second time you've used anymore in this way. Do I take it you mean "but offing the Taliban in the field is now SOP"

Different way of wording it, but sure.

I hope he can too. I also hope the CoC realizes it was a command decision based on compassion rather than malice and they don't hold it against him.

Use a phrase in science that I learned from the Director of the Hayden Planetarium Neil D. Tyson: The Captain merely helped this hostile meet his "event horizon". Doesn't that sound better than offing the bastard.

You mean deny him his essence?

I'm not trying to provoke anyone here, just pointing out that the people who go into battle for our countries are pretty sharp and that they can figure out the best way to cover their six in any given situation.

In battle you get to make choices while the lead is flying. That means when confronted with the potentially career-ending, reputation-ending, and potentially incarcerating choice of letting someone live who would never give you the same courtesy when you could just do him and be done with it and no one...not even your foes commanders...will care, what do you do?

Will not trying to provoke anyone either is essence of war hasn't changed much. and I still recall General Patton's assertion that "no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

I'd rather see taliban casualties than the flag draped caskets that come into Dover AFB frequently.
