Looks like China and Japan may be facing off for a grudge match.

The Chinese have never been a match for the Japanese. They like to think that they won the second world war single handedly, but the fact is if it weren't for the West(the US specifically), the Chinese Emperor would have been king over more than Manchuria and would likely have been restored to the Forbidden City. China would be a Japanese vassal.

In reality, the Japanese people are far superior to the Chinese, not racially but culturally. They're better educated, better organized, more motivated and make better soldiers. It's a matter of Japanese quality over Chinese quantity, which is all China has.

Bah, a few shiny new ships hardly makes them the threat the article supposes. Sure they've got a couple new Sovremenney destroyers and a few Kilos, but they still don't have much in the way of AORs, major surface combatants or even long-range naval strike aircraft.

They might be a major player in a decade or two, but today they're still largely a coastal force. Japan's new 18,000 helo carrier and a couple of their Kongos is more than a match for the PLA Navy, nevermind their subs, frigates and other assets.

That might be true for the past two centuries, but the Japanese got much of their traditions, religion, language, technology,etc from China in the days gone by. The Ming dynasty for example, could have squashed Japan like a grape if it had had the inclination to do so (as well as the Europeans), given their vast lead in military technology, huge naval fleet, political unity and powerful economy.

For much of its history, Japan has been to China as Canada has been to the USA (smaller, less influential, weaker militarily, etc).

That's a silly comparison, the only difference between Chinese and Japanese products is about 40 years of product development. Japanese consumer goods were the same quality (garbage) when they started exporting to the West in the 50s/60s. Same with Korean goods. Remember the Pony? Today's Korean cars are a far cry from that POS. My guess is in another 30 years, Chinese quality will be as good as Japan's are now.

China isn't what they where when Japan kicked the crap out of them in the 1930's and frankly neither is Japan.

Japan needs the vitality of war and victory, they finally have their army back and they will want to use it.

China will encourage them to act first because this is their big chance to prove that they've changed, and they will want Japan to go it alone.

First finishing scenario, Japan beats China using advanced technology and brutal tactics, everyone breaths a sigh of relief that China wasn't a big deal until everyone notices that Japan is now on of the leading world powers and the US has to ask if Japan is still friendly. Cut scene to the perfectly maintained ruins of Heroshima where Japanese tourists go to practice the 5 minutes of feigned death in sympathy for those that died at the site.

This of course leads us to the other worst case scenario, a China with a new province of Japan. Allowing their scientists and engineers to mix showing the Chinese the nature of presumption and arrogance that is mandatory of innovation. In short a truely terrifying nation.

I really hope they don't do anything stupid.

Japan makes me nervous. It seems the country's male popualtion is obsessed with animated movies depictiung the rape of young round-eye girls. That and they don't seem to have a lot of self-control in war. Thye seem to have a thing about taking it out on the women adn children when they've conquered a place.

Wish I could go there one day. I'm interested in what makes that place tick.

Probably the most definitive book on the Japanese is aptly titled The Japanese by Edwin O. Reischauer. He observed and noted aspects of Japanese culture that even the Japanese themselves are still impressed with. If this is a serious interest of yours then go buy the book - it's out of print so it'll be an eBay kind of thing.

Thanks for the tip. I read "Shogun" years ago, and that has pretty much informed my entire impression of the place. Well, that and WWII.
