Anything that distract from driving is stupid and should be illegal.

That would have to include drinking or eating. Holding a cup of coffee is supposed to be equivalent to .08. And kids - they should be sedated, strapped in a straight jacket and gagged so they don't distract the driver. Since this law doesn't outlaw hands free sets, even tho it's been shown that they are just as distracting as hand held, the law is a bit of a sham.

I noticed they don't mention anything sexual.
Can you get a ticket if your front-seat passenger gets a bit frisky. 8O

That happened to me once driving from Montreal to Quebec City.
I had the choice between pulling out or pulling over.
Guess which one I chose. :D

More superfluous, redundant legislation. We can already ticket/fine people for "careless" driving and prosecute them, criminally, for "dangerous" driving. Fixing ones hair, or talking on ones cellphone obviously falls under the category of "careless driving". Why do we need anything more?

common sense does not prevail with commuters that are trying to maximize their time.

Strathcona County (the suburbs east of Edmonton) already have a similar bylaw.

Frankly, I'm all for it. I'm tired of bozos swerving all over the road because they're eating, shaving, putting on make-up, talking on their cellphones, etc.

IMHO, $172 isn't stiff enough, it should be the same as running a red or failing to stop for peds - $500.

I agree that $172 dollars isn't enough, but I'm pissed at how many fines are in the $500 or higher range. when a person is taking home less than 40k after taxes, someone ought to have his balls cut off to suggest that a $1200 speeding ticket - where no harm was done - is reasonable.

Are we speaking of personal experience perhaps? That must have been quite some speeding to get a fine like that. Lucky the person didn't lose their license.

I agree with taking income into account. In Finland they do. I believe one guy got a $250,000 fine because of his wealth.

drive past a parked police office on the transcanada in Alberta at the posted speed limit of 110km/h.

the law states that yuo are supposed to slow down to 60km, so you are exceeding the speed by 50km/h...a $600 fine.....but because its a safety related fine, much like speeding in a construction zone, the fine doubles...

hence doing the speed limit on the transcanada between calgary and banff can cost you $1200
