The year Canada cancelled winter: Lack of March snowfall sets records nationwide
A dramatic lack of snowfall during a March month that behaved more like a lamb with no sign of the lion has set records across the country.
Environment Canada climatologist Dave Phillips says downtown Toronto, for example, didn't get a trace of snow during the month. He says it's the first time that's happened since record-keeping began in 1845, and Toronto wasn't alone with a snow-free March.
Ottawa may be the snowiest national capital in the world, he added, but the city had no snow this month. It usually averages 40 centimetres in March and the previous low in the city was 1.2 centimetres in 2006.
