Can anyone explain why anyone would compare this to the Dziekanski fiasco. The only thing in common was that the guy was polish.

$1:
Abramowicz says border officials repeatedly refused to release information about his nephew but after six hours admitted the man was being held on immigration concerns.

Um, yeah, that's correct. You're not entitled to information about an ongoing investigation by Canadian Border Services on someone else. Sorry if you think you are. Maybe we need to hang a sign at the airport "Welcome to Canada - We're not Poland".

Still, the least officials could do is tell them they landed safely and are at immigrations now.
Emigrating is not nothing...

see what supporting the laffs has done to you ?

It's like this at all airports.

Just wait until your mother is wandering around a strange airport
for an hour and a half, bit lost, while you wait.

Plane is down, she's not showing, and the wonderful people
on the other side wont even put out something on the PA,
never mind try to look for her.

Very nice.

It's a stupid policy and it needs to change.

Do you really want your relatives to be held incommunicado? Would you apply the same standard if your relative was picked up by the police, but they denied it? I don't see the harm of telling the relatives that he's being held so they don't have to worry that he's gone missing.

The fact he was immediately extradited lends some credence to the actions taken by immigration. There is no requirement by any immigration service in any country I’ve been to that requires them to contact anyone on your behalf.

He wasn't extradited, he wasn't permitted entry into the country. Great, if they thought he would seek employment here, I'm glad they did their job. But, not telling the relatives that are asking about him, denying he was even on the plane, that's just heartless and serves no purpose.

agreed and what it shows is they have learned nothing from the incident and have not changed a single bit.

I think the two incidents are quite dissimilar. In Dziekanski's case they just didn't give a shit until he started causing trouble, and had a very poor system of keeping track of people. In this latter case, they knew where he was but were covering up. Unfortunately the relatives in the latter case have no recourse - visitors to Canada have no rights at the border, so there will be no changes made in how they operate.

We go from that, to extending full Charter protection for anybody that does make it across the border. Crazy, huh?
