Stability, a willingness to accomodate divergent viewpoints, and an almost total rejection of destructive political extremism from the lunatic fringes are things for every Canadian to be greatly proud of.

The middle of the road is all the usable surface. The extremes of left and right are in the gutters.

If only we were less modest and humble and willing to take a risk or two and make all the right moves, we could be even better.

Don't be too quick to denigrate genuinely good human virtues such as magnanimity and modesty. Look southwards for the clearest example of how bad things can get when a people and a political process have absolutely none of either.

While that is true, the opposite extreme can be just as damaging. Canada has blown many opportunities by being too modest. This is a rare example of our modesty working to our advantage, at the expense of the excesses of American capitalism.

I don't disagree that we may have some "blown opportunities" in our history, but opportunities for what? To live better? For raising median income and reducing household debt? No, just opportunity for bragging rights for being the first to invent this or the first to do that. That's all fun and everything -and it can be an indicator of economic and social well-being, the things already implied in the above article- but its not really important in and of itself to running a good country.

I especially like how it isn't really slamming other countries to promote us. Sure it says that they have suffered economic downturn, but it isn't really saying "America sucks, we're better."

I dont think the article is trying to suggest that Canada is going to be the next global superpower, just that Canada is/will be better off in economic (and I suppose social) shape than other nations.

In otherwords, maybe superpowers will become more like Canada rather than the other way around, as we appear to be more sustainable.
