Why? It was just doing what elephants do when they feel threatened... I think they should put the resort owners down. They were not prepared.

Do you realize that in this country when a wild animal attacks and kills a human being, ideally the animal located and destroyed?
Even when human life hasn't been lost we destroy animals that have attacked people.
Try using your brain before your attitude.

Try using your brain before your attitude. Yes, I do realize that. Do I agree with it? Do I HOPE they put the animal down when you are in THEIR territory, and the animal is defending its offspring? Maybe you should try using your brain for a change.

Maybe you should try using your brain for a change. The "use your brain" comment was directed at zipper for being condescending, so stand down. I should have made clear where that was directed. The motivations of the animal are, in my opinion, quite irrelevant. After all that Cougar that the RCMP put down in BC last week was simply hunting for food in its natural range, doing what comes naturally. Was it right to kill it?

Was it? Cougars are known for their "useless" attacks, so to speak.

Brenda Brenda: Was it? Cougars are known for their "useless" attacks, so to speak. Useless attacks? Elephants are not the gentle giants people seem to think they are. They are known to have fits of unprovoked rage, in India they have leveled entire villages in brutal attacks, gore and trample kids, etc. This attack on the mother seems excessively brutal. The woman was likely dead or disabled after the first strike, yet the attack persisted.

Is it right for us to continue to build subdivisions, lodges and resorts in these wonderful, tranquil surroundings and continue to execute the animals that we've encroached on because they're a threat to us?
I think not.
Just as elephants are not the gentle giants they seem, humans are far from the superior species we seem to think we are. Mother nature likes to correct us on that one periodically. It might serve a few of us well to sit up and listen, instead of play the martyr and shoot.

$1: "We're not stupid. We know we were in the wild and anything could happen." And yet you blame the resort. $1: "If the people want to go to places where they are exposed to danger then we recommend armed escorts." And DON'T TAKE A FUCKING BABY WITH YOU EITHER!!!

PublicAnimalNo9 PublicAnimalNo9: $1: "We're not stupid. We know we were in the wild and anything could happen." And yet you blame the resort. $1: Brown and her husband worked at the International School of Kenya, where both were teachers and she was the librarian. Then you'd think they might be the first to know that you should do some research before heading out on an excursion like this. Typical human nature (for the most part) these days. Don't properly investigate something, an accident happens and you blame everyone around you rather than taking responsibility yourself.

While that sounds great in theory, in practice not many people are going to agree with you, particularly people living in rural areas who experience problems with overly aggressive wildlife.

I wouldn't call what happened to this woman and her child an "accident", it was an attack.
