I don't think she's dumb. Not an intellectual giant by any means, but very canny. She offers simple down-home solutions to complex issues, which is all a lot of people want. Of course, there are no simple solutions to these complex issues, but we don't really want to hear that, do we?

She wouldn't bother me that much, but we already had our turn with the "folksy" guy. Bit of a disaster--so much so that the right is desperately trying to hand him off to the liberals now.

I think that's a fair assessment. But I never gave two shits about the children of any politician. That's a family issue, and investing any concern about them other than how cute they look all dressed up on stage is, I'd say, pathetic.
