Windows 7 more popular than Harry Potter in the UK
$1:
Boy wizard Harry Potter has been outsold by Windows 7, as Microsoft's latest operating system becomes the biggest pre-order of all time, according to Amazon. More pre-orders of Windows 7 were sold within the first 8 hours of its availability than in Vista's entire pre-order period.
Managing director of Amazon, Brian McBride said, "The launch of Windows 7 has superseded everyone's expectations, storming ahead of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' as the biggest-grossing pre-order product of all-time at Amazon.co.uk, and demand is still going strong."
I get my pre-ordered copy that i bought in July when they had the $49 CAD special! Its already being released in some parts of the world as its the 22nd there now.
I've been running the same install of Vista since its launch day, so I'm looking forward to doing a nice cleanup and fresh boot. I've accumulated a lot of junk over the last 3 years. I've already cleaned off my C drive and its ready to go.

I've been running it since it was released to the presses (DVD). I've got the Home, Pro and Ultimate x64 editions running, and I like them.
But all the Ultimate Extras that were in Vista Ultimate are gone. That being said, it's quite stable. And quick.
Like XP 64, it doesn't mind the occasional 'downgrade' for drivers, like my PhysX card. I'm running the Vista 64bit drivers, and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 doesn't mind at all.

For any students out there, you can get an amazing deal. You can get Windows 7 for only $39.99. This deal was only available to the US students for 29.99 until today.

Holy shit...just ordered. I'm glad I didn't rape myself by getting a copy Vista a few months ago after a crash of my computer...*cough*

I'm supposed to get it free, at least thats the deal I agreed to when I bought my laptop. Can't wait to try it, I'm not a fan of vista.

It looks good and it everything Vista should have been just like XP was eveything windows 2000 should have been.
I will upgrade in 4 years time when XP is no longer supported or if a buy a new system and it is pre-installed. I see no advantage to upgrading and a huge downside as there is a fair about of programs I run that would be iffy to take to a new OS.

Eh, just tried installing, and it didn't work for me...so...not a good start for me.
My software should be compatible, but it might be my Vista version that's fucked up...which is reasonable because it seemingly fucks my computer senseless

You tried the upgrade disk? And expected it to work? It's Windows for God's Sakes.
So far here it's a real lead balloon. My stock arrived at 9:00 am this morning, we rushed to price it and put it in the shelves. Not one fucking person even enquired about it, I didn't even notice anyone pick one up and look at the box...

Cue High Hopes by Frank Sinatra. I basically thought..."Awesome, Windows for a price that doesn't destroy your life savings!" And then I realized it didn't work...
Thankfully I'm getting my money back. Of course, this took 2-3 hours, on two customer support lines, having four disconnects.

There is an XP mode, which basically runs XP programs in a virtualization enviroment, if you have old software.
commanderkai you got student copy that fast?... I wouldn't upgrade either, I always prefer doing a full install.
herbie the vast majority of people don't upgrade their OS, they get an new OS when the buy a new computer. At least one store had a massive line and an enthusiastic crowd, heh http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/22/micr ... ers-video/
