Heres the order of merit, for accomplishing very little during 13 years in power, Avoiding criminal prosecution while at the helm of a government where millions were given out to friends of the liberals in the Belle Province. etc etc

Compared to the three pygmies that have followed him as leader he stands out as giant in the history of the Liberal Party.

Chretien had some trouble with corruption while in office. I certainly don't give him a "pass" for that. But he did a lot of good things too. He was strong on the "no" side in both separatist referenda, he was a huge player in the Constitution's patriation and he staunchly opposed special treatment for Quebec on Meech Lake. He kept Canada out of Iraq, despite the swirling war-hawk rhetoric around him and he did more to bring Canada's national debt under control than any PM before or since. I understand why the Cons want to keep hanging the sponsorship scandal on Chretien (and deservedly so), but taken in sum, he was the best prime minister we've had over the past 30 years. And he choked that dude on national tv.

I disagree, so far to date. I'll say Harper is the best Prime Minister we've had, pending his record at the end of his career of course.

Harper has a lot of work to do on the debt to be even CLOSE to Chretien in terms of his fiscal record. Harper's deficit makes him, so far, a failure as PM in my books. But the jury's still out...we'll see what he does in the future.

Also, I never mentioned Chretien's work on crime. He brought out the YCJA to stiffen punishment for violent youth offenders. Harper's talked a lot of talk about being tough on crime, but no results yet.

Remember that Chretien had majority. That means that Conservatives voted for him too. We liked him till the sponsorship money.

And some of us who realized a few million here and a few million dere shut them up for a decade, and whole lot of nothin startling meant a stable business environment that paid down a shitload of debt, still like him.
