They claimed company president Stephen Rapps lectured them on being responsible for unsanitary working conditions at their workplace.

They also complained Rapps told them they were no longer in China and they must wash themselves daily, and said: "You Chinese eat like pigs." Two workers were assaulted, they added.

Rapps challenges this version of the meeting and what was said, his lawyer, Julius Grey, said yesterday. "There was never any racist comment," Grey said, adding the amount levied was "crazy."

Rapps did call workers to a meeting, Grey noted, but all he said was that "things were dirty, people were acting like pigs." Rapps never singled out the workers' ethnic or national origin, Grey insisted.


Racism or ethnic misunderstanding?

Sad isn't it when we have come to a state where an employer's meeting with his employees has to be recorded to avoid litigation?

Yes. Very. People lie and cheat every day because we are a money grabbing, selfish species...

People in Canada seem to be afraid to be recorded, I know of a few employers that do record any meetings or disciplinary actions. The employees have raised stinks claiming it was against their charter rights to be recorded. Never went to court but the employees sure were not happy to be recorded.
