If Canada is needed in a combat role two years from now the US can't be very optimistic as to how the war is going to go.

They can suck hole and kiss ass all they want... they can try and pamper us as much as they want.... now that they're figuring out that we're leaving at a set time. It won't make a difference, we're gone and if Harper or whatever PM is in power at that time back tracks on this and extends our combat over there beyond what was already agreed.... there's going to be hell to pay one way or another.

And of course when we did go over there, the US fuct off to Iraq to leave the mess mostly in other NATO nations' hands to sort out. Now they're back and trying to pamper us to stay longer?

Why? So they can then venture off to some other country to wage war.... perhaps Iran?

Oh yeah.... we'll have such a big impact, we've done so much, we're so great, the Toronto Maple Leafs are a great team, Tim Hortons makes good coffee, we love our zippers.....

.... hell is there anything else they may have missed while looking for a part of our asses they haven't made lip contact with?

Then let's say we stay longer.... it goes on and on and on, with still no clear objectives, more soldiers die, the US continues on their air strikes and killing of civilians, continue to use us as their only ploy against the afghan people to show we give a damn (while they couldn't give to craps about them) And then we plan to pull out yet again, and we get them kissing our asses again to stay longer.

They can kiss our asses all they want, but eventually we're going to need to sit down or take a dump.... their lips better not be nearby.

It's past time to end this conflict, we have served and done our mission with integrity and ability far surpassing any other NATO country, time for others to step up and take over.
Our leaders must not be convinced to stay, everyone should voice your opinion to your MP's and let them know we are done.

There you have it... "credibility with local Afghans"

Which they have zero.... why? Because they didn't have to bother with that responsibility because we were there and now the buck is passing and they don't want to do it.... they're used to killing and destroying and to actually "care" about something other then their own nation and their own troops and their own gains...... well that screws everything up for them.

Oh I'm pretty sure all of us here in Canada are fully aware of our role, our sacrafices and our accomplishments.... we're also pretty aware of how they have been continually undermined by US actions that regularlly kill Afghan civilians whom we're supposed to all be protecting.

The only reason why they want us to stay is because we're the only one's doing things right and give a damn about doing it right. Once we leave, expect the entire Afghan conflict to turn into one big festering glob of sh*t.

Why the hell should we be the ones to stay in the front lines from the very begining, right until the bitter end, trying to fix everybody else's problems when nobody else is willing to help us out.

All we are is a band-aid on an axe wound over there, and we're holding the main artery together..... if the US can't figure out how to complete this medical procedure properly, expect the operation to be a complete failure.

That reminds me of something.

I have no beef against the general US population.... just those who created this war and those in charge who have no idea how to finish what they started, who expect us to tag along to do their work for them.

It's just a bit of a piss off personally..... nothing more.

Canada won't be pulling out of Afghanistan in 2011. We might pull out of Qandahar, we might re-define our role there, we might cut the troop levels but we're not going anywhere.

Canada has 3 choices:
1. Commmit to NATO by committing to this mission.
2. Leave NATO and spend $20B/year on the military and reconsider our anti-nuclear stance.
3. Hand our sovereignty over to the US or whomever comes first. Kiss the notion of 'Canada' good-bye.


The first choice is the cheapest and therefore most preferable to politicians. You want to know why Canadian soldiers are really dying in Afghanistan? Why we're really there? Assuming you don't like the stated reasons which are legitimate the real reason Canadian soldiers are dying there for NATO commitment is because it's less of a political hot-potato than actually beefing up our armed forces to match our size and geographical importance.

I'd rather Option Two. There's no justification for being in NATO in the first place, certainly not since the Cold War.

It may seem more cost effective to stay in NATO, but who's really calling the shots for where our troops are sent and why?

Clearly everybody else.

And then we're sent to some war that usually has nothing to do with us, we sacrafice our troops, equipment, resources on something that has nothing to do with us and when we actually have to focus on something that has to due with us..... we're still spending more money, more troops and more resources to deal with that, on top of what everybody else expects of us.

So exactly how is staying in NATO "Cheaper" in the long run?

Canada has been a member for a long time, and yet we've only put a pile of money and resources into our military once we were sent off to this war..... NATO sure wasn't protecting us this whole time.

And if someone mentioned the Arctic and needing protection if the worst case occurs with territory and all..... well one of the countries screwing around with our territory is a member of NATO, so how's that going to work?
