THis is sick, in the neighborhood I grew up you the shop owner and his family would beat the living dayslights out of you for stealing. The thief would be ver happen for a cop to show up, but that isn;t politically correct these days.

This is a grey area to me.

Tiger, as a kid did you never knick a cany bar or magazine from the local shop? I did, and guess what, my folks found out from the shop owner and made me bring back what I had stolen, and then work it off sweeping the stores floors for a day. (first last and only time I've shoplifted)
Robbery is one thing, shoplifting? In this case it wasn't a child but still, catching and detaining would have been enough, there was clearly no need to beat on the culprit. This shop should be insured and there is a level of acceptable loss in the insurance policy.

Choban Choban:

Unless the shoplifter stole a diamond ring the value of the goods stolen would not exceed the deductible on the shop's policy, so no the loss wouldn't be covered.
There's a certain line that I'll support someone's right to defend their property, however:

$1:
Police allege three men chased the accused shoplifter, who's also charged, and nabbed him, before forcing him into a van and allegedly beating him.

It's one thing to detain for the police, it's another thing to exact your own revenge. Off to jail with them.
