doubt they could get away with calling themselves democrats and the democrats south of the border might not like it if parties in other countries tried to copy there name especially once they found out who jack layton was .

Drop the NDP name all together, move to a more centre/left position, while holding onto their roots slightly and they'd be successful.
Dropping Layton would be a good start too.
