"The Mohawks at the reserve near Cornwall, Ont., have said they don't want armed guards at the post because it would violate their sovereignty and increase the likelihood of violent confrontations".

Well maybe if they behaved like resonable human beings subject to the laws of the land there would be no increase in violence, obviously by making this statement they are letting on that they are prepared to disregard the law (as usual).

US guards have always been armed.
It's Ontario.. they'll do nothing.

Edmund Burke put it well:

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

Again we, (Canada and Ontario) will do nothing in the face of those who break our laws, despise our Country but are willing to take our cash.

Enough is enough already. These natives consider themselves a soverign nation so the rest of us should fence the reserve off and demand proper credentials to enter Canada, we should also cut off power without a purchase agreement. They can't have it both ways, but then again, we do not have a government that will stand up to these thugs, and bootleggers. I wonder how many contraband cigarettes and illegal booze and firearms have entered Canada through this 'soverign nation'.

Shut the border crossing and patrol the river crossing like they were hostile territories.

It is time we did something, we need to send a message, we need to either arrest the leadership or assert ourselves by force. This is Canada, not the Mohawk Nation, its time we remind people of that.

Doesn't this reserve have tribal police? Hasn't the OPP or the RCMP ever made patrols there? It's not like guns are new to Canada and its' the wild west. As long as the people using them are trained properly there is no danger. I suspect the real reason for this is dramatics, and possibly they fear for their smuggling industry.

It's a start. This stuff has been going on for years. I know a few of the FN guys from Akwasasne Police and there is a lot of stuff going on there that nobody dares tackle. You know the score there, were you not there with an FN rifle?

You are so right. I wonder how many other grow-ops and other illegal activities are going on in this reserve. the Mohawks are basically orgranized crime hiding under the cover of native tradition. I guess all of the illegal cigarettes are being used for healing and traditional ceremonies. What a bunch of friggin' crooks. These people have no rights to live here!

Well if you look at if from the Mohawk side I'd say they are following your proverb to a tee.

They (and "we") are not subservient to your laws on our own land. And if we choose to follow your laws then it is because we chose to do so and not because you forced us to.

If your view of Native people is that our own laws and traditions and rights cease to exist because of your laws and views then you are wrong.

If arming boarder guards that are stationed on Mohawk land is something the Mohawks do not want than I would say you have no choice but to listen and compromise. Because if they let you impose your will on them and do nothing, then evil has indeed triumphed.

Just waiting for you to pop in on this Donny...Do you think that illegal activites are not illegal on 'native' soil? Do you agree that it is ok for natives to be more heavily armed than those who are supposed to enforce the laws of the land? Do you agree with seperate, 'soverign' lands within one nation? Where do we draw the line? Do we move the border crossing away from this reserve? If we have to who pays for it because it would affect both Canada and the United States, and why are they not screaming at the U.S border guards because they are armed 100 yards away from the Canadian border guards. Perhaps they are afraid that their 'storming' would result in a hail of bullets.

This is a pretty thing for the natives to protest. Exactly what difference would it make to any native person if a border guard was armed or not if they aren’t doing anything wrong?

On Donny's suggestion to comprimise, if they don’t want to have boarder agents on the reserve then simply post them on the roads leading out which in the end will be a hell of a lot more inconvenient to them in the end, how's that for a comprimise?
