Labour contracts aren't like other types of contracts. You can't force the work from someone if they change their mind. The 13th Ammendment is pretty clear about that.

I said they should demand to be compensated, not to be forced to work.
They said they'd serve X years for Y money. They owe the army the remainder of that time and the ammount can be calculated and a bill submitted.

These gutless wonders can run but they can't hide and the contract they signed can haunt them untill they make good.

Even better, the army can flogg these off to a collection agency and wash these POS of their hands.

Yeah, of course, the military needs some different rules, but it seems a little silly to tell a kid that made a mistake that he's going to prison because he regrets his career choice. Hell, I regret a BUNCH of my choices when I was young punk. It's not like he's of any further use to the US military anyway. It'd be kind of like telling a hockey player that blows out his knee that he has to play out the rest of his contract even though he can't skate anymore. But, again, I understand the military-way of thinking about these cases too.

I have no problem with throwing any young person in jail for making a mistake. Thats how people learn from mistakes and it shows others that they should think what they are doing. Fifteen months is nothing compared to what the military is allowed to do to these people. What I cant get is why Canadians feel they should coddle these people like they are some down trodden mass that is being oppressed.

I havent heard of single story where any of them are being forced to do multiple tours. All the cases I have heard of are from cowards who signed up to get free schooling or an easy paycheck, but when it came time to go to Iraq they tucked tail.

I agree that people joining the military should be held accountable unless they can prove they were lied to about what was required of them. There are however plenty of stories of people deserting after already doing a tour.

There is also the fact of extended tours past deployment dates and the whole stop-loss thing. The US army deserves its lumps for treating its soldiers wrongly also.

Did anybody actually read the story? First of all the he is a she and secondly

She has previously said that the tour caused her to become disillusioned with the American mission there.

I do not support her and think she should be sent back to the US.
