Exposing children to toxic waste is wrong, they need to give out more tickets to people that commit this crime.Go ahead smoke till you puke out a lung but keep the kids out of it. Exposing kids to toxic smoke IS wrong, but it ought to be a civil matter, not one for the police. We spend tax dollars to have police protect us from criminals, not to make our parenting decisions for us.

If you want to blow your head off don't let your kids stand behind you and take them with you, its a known fact tobacco kills, the closer you are to it the more likely you are going to die.

I don't know the best way to deal with this, but I do remember being in the car with my mum when she smoked. We all hated it. And none of us had a choice.

How about "Hey Mom, do you think you could smoke somewhere else 'cause you're making your children choke"? Family disagreements are usually best solved that way...through communication. Still not a matter for government and police to solve.

This should not be a police issue. This should be common sense. A 15 year old lights up a cigarette while her 20 year old friend gets fined for doing the same... I dunno, but something doesn't sound right there, does it?

Frankly there's better ways to deal with it. Public awareness is one way. I like what my city did though. You can't smoke within 10 feet of any public building entrance or exit or any business that wishes to post such a declaration. Doing so results in a fairly hefty fine. One cannot also smoke in any bingo hall, liquor store, church, etc.

Saves me a LOT of hassle of trying to avoid second hand smoke. I used to love going to bingo with my dad but hated with a passion the second hand smoke.

We communicated, she smoked. That's the way it was back then. It's funny - my niece was a premie and no-one could smoke around her - doctor's orders - so no-one did. They smoked around the other kids though.

Back when I was a kid we didn't know any better when our parents smoked in front of us. We were kids, we didn't know they were giving us cancer.
