But if it is just a sticker that can be "flicked off" is it really defacing the coins?

Its better then taking a sharpie and drawing over the whole coin making it black.

While I don’t necessarily agree with politics of the group doing the “defacing”, it’s a sticker. Who really cares? If the Mint/government takes these guys to court, it’ll raise their status even more.

Besides, in my opinion a sticker that is easily removed is not “defacing”. The coin is still usable without any permanent damage.

I wish the media would stop giving them free publicity instead.

I'm not going to care if the loonies I get have a sticker on them. I definately would suggest that all companies who take coins through vending machines and the like send any repair costs to these fools and claim that their stickers fowled up their machines.
Let them try to defend that in court.

Not really. Any business can refuse the coin if they want until its in its original form. Its more about the bigger picture here. If these guys are allowed then where does it end? You could put anything on if it "can be flicked off with a finger".

Question...how did the name loonie come along?

The first time I went to Canada and asked if I could get "singles" I got a weird look. Then I got a laugh from my family when I came back into the car  Then my grandpa told me there called "loonies" and I didn't understand why.

the Loon is the bird found on the coin
next came the 2 dollar coin so some Canadians thought it was cute and funny to call it a twoonie, the whole point is mute since we no longer have a 1 or 2 dollar bill so we should just call it a one and a two or a single and a double.
