Last I heard the police and the gang taskforce were solving something like 4% of these.

Huh? Death Penalty as a deterrent to murder, not a good idea sandorski.

Deterrent or not, I think it's not the taxpayers reponsibility to house these criminals for life, when they just recommit crimes in prison, drugs, murder, rape.

I mean, he already has a life sentence, what else are you going to add on?

We can humanely euthanize a dog, and to be honest as murderer is nothing short of an animal that should be put down, in my opinion.

These people arent afraid of death, they are afraid of being just an everyday person having to work for a living, to struggle for the toys....hit em where it hurts, seize assets, revoke licenses, freeze bank accounts, bust them for every little thing, publish names...shame them at every opportunity. And have mandatory sentencing for gun offences...and no bail.

They pretty much do that in the state of Florida and use the proceeds to fight more crime.

Great Idea. oh btw, Florida also has the death penalty... after taking all their toys and money, they take what is most precious, their life.

An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

The death penalty wouldnt be a deterrent for these people. They thrive of the fear factor and notoriety, they celebrate an associates death as if he/she were a martyr. They are more afraid of being nobody's and would rather leave young and high rolling. Lock em up and give them what they are most afraid of...being just a number

The death penalty might not be a deterent to first time offenders, but I can assure you that we'd have no more problems with multiple repeat offenders.

Given the minimul amount of actual jail time these criminals do, thanks to a lax and ineffective criminal justice system, putting these guys in jail doesn't mean that they are just a number at all.

Jail time enhances their street reputations and ensures that they can further their criminal enterprises by forming new alliances and gang affiliations before being unleashed against the public, yet again and again and again.

Even locking them up for life isn't effective, most of them can and do, carry out their criminal activities both inside and outside the prison system while incarcerated.

So let's see, rehabilitation doesn't work, doing short or long prison terms doesn't work, so unless someone can come up with a better solution, I guess it leaves us with only one real option.

How about automatically deporting them, if they don't have citizenship. Do we really need people that in Canada, when we have enough domestically produced scum?

Worked so well after Prohibition. There will always be a profit, even if you legalized drugs, prostitution, and anything else, because no matter what, some organized element will rob some of it, and smuggle/sell it for cheaper.

I'm still waiting to hear how legalization of drugs in Canada is going to reduce profit to gangs who's main market is still the US.
It's going to be prohibition all over again except with drugs instead of alcohol.

I honestly believe that the true purpose of the IHIT team is not to catch these folks but to spin and minimize the problem.

Lol.
A few days ago, one of the radio folks at CKNW were discussing this and Wally Oppal phoned in to defend himself and the police. I didn't hear it and have been watching the audio vault section but this is what their saying:

$1:
Due to sensitive material we will be unable to post the 3PM, 4PM and 5PM hours for Friday, February 6, 2009.

How's that for free speech and an independent press?

There was a dramatic decrease in the level of violence. Gangs have limited Markets from which they derive their Income. Drugs are by far their biggest source of Income these days.
