Instead, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario sets minimum prices as part of its "social responsibility" mandate established in 1993. Translation: If alcohol is too cheap, you may abuse it.

Thank you nanny state. What would I ever do without you?

They started doing that in Alberta last year and every bar has a minimum they have to charge for all alcoholic drinks.

It's to keep the bars from giving out allmost free drinks and getting the patrons wanting more.

Not a big deal,no one raised an eyebrow when they did it in Alberta here.
I could be wrong here but doesnt BC do the same thing?

EDIT-A case of 12 labbats blue costs me $20.00 here.Maybe Ontario should up the price of whine instead.

$1:
The Ontario government last month quietly hiked the minimum price that can be charged for beer, to $25.60 from $24 for a case of 24 bottles.

Yes they do.
The government sets the price, not market conditions, and that's wrong.

Liberal nanny state?

Ziggy just said Alberta started doing it last year. Did that escape your notice or is Alberta a Liberal nanny state also?

As a side note, bars giving out very cheap drinks become much more liable to lawsuits by drunk drivers as it is often seen as encouragement to overindulge.

People shouldn't be drinking and driving anyhow! Ever. Bars should not be in trouble for people who choose to drink and drive.

Exactly,we have very strict rules coming in now and anyone who serves alcohol has to take this test.Mostly it's for liability but you dont want to own or buy a bar in Alberta unless it has Video lottery terminals or you will do broke.

It's illegal to serve a customer who is over the limit, how do you tell?

You allmost need every customer to blow in a breathalizer when entering the premises to be safe from a lawsuit.

Someone leaves a bar drunk, kills someone in a car accident, guess who's going to be liable? The person at the last bar that served him will be.

The law does not see it that way. Bars do have a responsibility to cut people off and to not allow people obviously intoxicated to be served.

I agree that drunks who drive and kill people or are prosecuted should have no standing to sue the bar but what about the victims of the driver?

They just might have a case against a bar with 50 cent pint nights.
