Well, if Harper hadn't already spent the surplus trying to buy votes, maybe we could, but it's all gone now.

Well, you could argue that lowering taxes is a stimulus package. And if you were over on the other thread hounding the Conservatives for deficit spending, hopefully you're not also here condemning them for not spending more on a "stimulus package."

No, my point was he already 'stimulated' the economy about 10 months ago, and now, even if he wanted to, he couldn't because the cupboard is bare.

Like I said in that other thread, if he had cut taxes OR increased spending, we'd be fine and have some cash to do something. He decided to do both so he could get a majority. Well, he didn't get his majority and he doesn't have any cash to do anything, other than pull a 'Mulroney' (deficit spending). Frankly, I don't think the Big 3 deserve a bail out, and if you're not going to bail them out, then you can't bail out the forestry industry or anyone else.

I have little love for Harper and this further cements what I've been saying for the last year or so, he'll do whatever it takes to get a majority, no matter the cost. He got elected on promises and acocuntability, and so far, he hasn't been accountable for anything and broken plenty of his promises.

I know the economically 'correct' thing to do in a recession is to spend, spend, spend to stimulate the eocnomy, but if we go into a deficit again, that too has adverse effects on your currency and economy.

Frankly, I find it really sad that third world China has $582 BILLION to invest in their economy and we have...nothing!

$1:
"Where is the plan to get our economy back on track?" Dion asked, singling out the auto industry in particular as a sector in need of government help.

Ever heard the expression "flogging a dead horse"? People aren't buying cars particularly american gas guzzlers, it's as simple as that. Throwing good money at a bad problem doesn't make sense unless the auto sector can come forward with some concession of their own and I have yet to see that happen.

Whine all you want, Canada is far better off than most countries on the planet.

What were the Liberals solution again? Oh yeah a carbon tax that would have sent us into a depression much less a recession!

Well, we're in a recession and guess who's in charge? Yes, the Conservatives. The Liberals, unlike Mulroney adn Harper, balanced the budget. Brought to you by "Truth Hurts."

Canada can't do anything for the auto sector until the US decides what to do first. As of right now it'd be pointless and would just be throwing money away.to give the automakers in Ontario any aid if the Yanks decide to let the Big 3 collapse.

That's all well and good but some people are predicting a deficit of 25 billion soon. Even with the Liberals 8 billion or so surplus that's a big deficit. It's easy to say the Liberals balanced the budget, but they also weren't faced with what some are describing as the worst recession since the great depression.
