This does undercut the assertions some make that Harper's making Canada an international pariah, but I do wonder how much of this is just a generally favorable view of Canada being transferred over to its leader.

so what would the good be in saying no to our most essential trading and economic partner all the time just to prove to other people that "we are not american". This redundant and typical crap is getting old, try coming up with a compelling argument rather than just trying to play on the emotions of the less intelligent by ranting something about us agreeing with the US on some issues means we are somehow just taking it up the ass from the US. This is why Canada had become such an world embarrassment during the 90's, and is why we're in a far better position with a much better future now.

You're right. Nobody pays much attention to Canada. I've lived in England and the US, and Brits and Americans know almost nothing about Canada, other than the usual stereotypes. And they are our most important friends with whom we share the strongest ties. If they don't know much, the rest of the world knows less.

A few environmentalists may get their noses bent out of shape because of Kyoto, or a few Taliban may be upset, but otherwise, Canada has a strong brand.

The environment isn't referenced in the article, mtbr, the economy is. People no doubt hear on the news that Canada has had a better economy than the rest of the G-8 on the news. What they most likely don't hear is that Harper is relatively new and has done nothing for the economy except sit idly by while Ontario's manufacturing sector falls apart.

Most people outside their countries have no idea who the leaders of other countries are, except perhaps the big nations. I would guess that at least 95% of Canadians could not tell you who the Presidents or Prime Ministers were of Spain, Italy and Poland, etc. These are countries as big or bigger than Canada. But Canadians are clueless about who leads them. They have no idea who the leaders are of more important countries such as India, China and Japan.

That's normal. However, most people will have a vague opinion about other countries.

Which is why all this "Canada is losing its international reputation" nonsense is such BS. People don't care about Harper or any Canadian PM, just like people don't care about the President of Spain. It doesn't matter to people outside their countries.
