No Fun City strikes again. It amazes people the power that people are willing to hand over to bureacracies, especially at the municipal level.

I likethis comment from benetah the linked article:

$1:
Shooting up heroin is ok, but tree houses are illegal. Nicely done Vancouver.

It's probably because they can't tax it, or find a way to tax it. So it must come down. First no more street hockey in a lot of Canadian Cities and now this. Seems like we are getting more and more idiotic with the rules day by day. But we allow clinics for dope users. Go figure.

My dad built a small canopy off the house for a little shelter out back, and got a visit from the by-law officers soon after. He had no clue it would be illegal but I guess it is. Turns out they caught him because the city buys satellite phtos every month and then has software figure out if there are any differences from the previous month's photos.

When I was a kid we built our own treehouses.
Raid Dad's garage for wood and nails, find a nice patch of woods or stand of trees and build away. If it falls down you built it wrong, If you fall out of it you broke your leg and spent the summer in a cast.

Why doesn't he take it down, get a permit, and put it back up? Surely the neighbour doesn't have that much say in the matter.

We have a retarded neighbour that bitched to bylaw about everything. He's filed two noise complaints against us (one for our dog barking during the day, another because our drill was too loud when we were building a deck). These are the same people that asked us to take down our wind chimes, asked our elderly neighbour to turn off her sprinkler because it was 'annoying his family while they were eating', and called bylaw on a neighbour who made too much noise cutting a single board for a shelf.

Lucky for us when by-law came around, the bylaw officer thought the guy was retarded -she couldn't even hear the drill from the front of the house- so she didn't write it up or anything.

People like this get annoying. There's actually more than one of us considering a harrassment complaint.
