Perhaps this was just a way for the composer to drum up some PR. You'd think after all the money she's made off of that song, being the good Canadian she is she would just donate it to the CBC. It's a cultural icon now.

I agree. She should just donate the song.

On the radio today someone mentioned making it a heritage song and take it away from her and make it public domain.

Baloney. It's her song--she's entitled to make money off of it. If she charges too much money, then the CBC should go het a song somewhere else. They could still use hers occassionally.

It's the law, it's her work, she is entitled to reap the benifits, the CBC has reaped great benefits from the HNIC theme song.

isn't that the purpose of copyrights and royalties?

i mean artists get paid if their song is used in a commercial even if its an old song

I'm not sating she shouldn't get paid for it. Maybe CBC could buy the rights from her for a lump sum.

I think the assholes at the CBC are just using this to draw attention to their sad bleatting for more and longer duration funding. They see that the attitude has changed in Ottawa and they know that the gravey train has left the station.
They don't really care about the viewers or the product (look how many times they tried to get rid of Don Cherry) so removing this and replacing it won't bother them. They can then show that their taking steps to save money while they wallow in the attention this change is provoking.

The song costs some $500 each time it's played and there's no doubt that a comercial during HNIC costs 10x that ammount. This isn't about money.

Liberals, they really have nothing better to do.

"Earlier on Friday, Liberal heritage critic Denis Coderre told reporters in Ottawa that Conservative Heritage Minister Josée Verner must defend one of Canada's most famous musical traditions and do everything possible to ensure the CBC continues to broadcast the theme.

"The Hockey Night in Canada theme is a part of Canada's culture that goes beyond sport," Coderre said. "If the minister wants to show that she cares about Canadian heritage, this is her chance."

As I stated on another post. It is a part of Canadian tradition that is going to be gone for greed.
