Too bad the Buffalo is getting harder to maintain, the pilots who fly them over some of the most demanding terrain in Canada love them. No other plane proposed for Search and Rescue work in BC is as capable as the Buff. I worked with 442 Squadron in the past, and have listened to pilots talk about those old and wonderful aircraft. Hercules were tried, but are simply not agile enough to fly search patterns in the rugged mountains of the west coast, the pilots feared that there would be crashes from trying to do the job properly with an inadequate aircraft.
I'm not certain what aircraft Ottawa wants to replace the Buffalo with, but whatever plane is choosen will have a tough act to follow
