"'We cannot sit back and let others damage our reputation and give the world a false picture of Alberta,' Stelmach said."

Why not take a picture of the dead ducks? That would be an accurate picture.

How's Eddie going to spin this one to say that the tar sands aren't all that bad?

Guess you missed his statement right after it happened. He handled it very well, syncrude will pay some huge fines because their noise cannons werent working properly because of the snow.

My opinion of the guy went up a few notch's after listening to him this morning.

Settling ponds are everywhere and this happens all the time, funny you never hear about those though because it's not the tarsands right? Moose and elk also get into the settling ponds.I,ve watched it happen many times.

COULD pay some huge fines. We'll see what those ultimately wind up being. Guess you missed the part where a tipster reported this. Syncrude tried to keep it quiet (quiet as it must have been without the noisemakers ha ha ha). There's also something wrong with a situation in which you have to create noise pollution in order to reduce the effects of chemical pollution.

Besides, Eddie simply restated the pentalties that were in place already and he gets points with you for that? How much more sycophantic can you get?

The noisemakers involved are known by another name..."carbide canons". This involves a mechanism dripping water on calcium carbide producing acetylene which is ignited at a preset pressure....that and the rate of drip is basically the timing mechanism. It is obvious this does not work well in sub-freezing conditions.
These devises are commonly used in the Niagara vineyards. The sound can vary from the popping of a champagne cork to that of a howitzer. To be effective though workers must occasionally patrol the vineyards with shotguns loaded with "flashbangs". These projectiles detonate at about 100-150 yards out.
A recent immigrant from the Netherlands seeking to "do the right thing" set his devise up beside his manure pond/lagune and this prompted complaints from the rurbanites........
Which in turn set off a confrontation between them and the local animal rights crowd.....great theatre.
