failing gas guzzler industry is more like it. Why should Ottawa prop up a company that builds unwanted vehicles. The hypocrisy of the left is amazing..concern for the environment one minute...bitch about gas prices and demand Ottawa spend money on old unwanted technology. When will the left get their shit together?

CAW is an environmental movement? Interesting. Put down the pipe please. I agree that bail outs to an industry that is not only making bad cars but also cars no one wants should be the last thing any government should be cratering to. This industry has been out of step badly with demand for over a generation.

Despite the latest round of layoffs at General Motors and slumping car sales, Premier Dalton McGuinty is promising Ontario will get a new auto assembly plant.

McGuinty says Ontario is still willing to invest with automakers to secure jobs, despite GM's decision to eliminate nearly 1,000 jobs at an Oshawa plant in which the province invested $235 million.

He says it's no secret the province is in talks with Italy's Fiat, and is also in discussions with carmakers in China, India and Germany about investing in Ontario.

McGuinty says the province will land a new auto assembly plant which he promises will create more direct and spinoff jobs.

The premier says the province insists that no jobs be moved out of Ontario when it invests directly in an auto plant, but adds the contracts do not preclude the possibility of layoffs.

Economic Development Minister Sandra Pupatello says it's important to note GM is not moving jobs to another jurisdiction, but plans to trim its workforce because of slumping sales.

GM Canada said Monday that about 900 hourly and 70 salaried workers were expected to lose their jobs when one shift at the Oshawa, Ont., truck plant is eliminated this summer.

GM said it was laying off about 3,500 workers at North American plants that produce pickup trucks and big sport utility vehicles.

During Tuesday's question period, NDP Leader Jack Layton accused the government of doing nothing to control high gas prices.

"You cannot trust this government to respond to this crisis," Layton told the House. But Prime Minsiter Stephen Harper dismissed the charge, saying that while other parties want higher gas taxes, his government has lowered the GST by two percentage points to return more money to Canadian households.

"It's obviously absolutely correct to observe that the price of oil and gas is rising," Harper said. "But you know, Mr. Speaker … the best the opposition can come up with is higher gas taxes. That's obviously not the right policy."

If Buzz wants to know what's ailing the auto industry, he should look in the mirror. The auto unions in the states got benefit packages that are way too expensive for the manufacturers to keep up with. That said, the manufacturers probably should have just taken their lumps when the benefits were agreed to and rejected them.

In any case, the present situation is unsustainable, and for the government to sink massive amounts of money into failing businesses is not the right way to go.

I would never favour using any of my tax money to bail out any Fortune 500 company. The big three need to look inward to correct some of their problems. The only thing our government should do is demand Japan stop their unfair trade policies...

Japan must open up their markets to our North American products as we have opened up our markets to theirs...

If the EU can use it's muscle to threaten our sealing industry, why can't we ask Japan to trade fairly...??? We ask the same from our largest trading partner, the US (and vice versa) YET it is accepted as common practice to allow Japan to have a closed market to the entry of so many of our products (and I'm not only talking cars - so please no replies like "The Japanese would not want an Impala or Dodge or..."...That's not what I mean...

Japanese companies like Canon, JVC, Sony, Nissan, Panasonic have easy access to our markets, yet the favour is not returned to many of our North American companies... Trade should be for the benefit of both trading nations, not just one...

Historically, you can look at TVs and other electronics. But, Mp3 players, gaming consoles, probably some cameras, cellphones.

Funny thing about the Japanese consumer. Harley Davidson ships a lot of bikes to Japan, which well padded consumers snap up despite the cost of enormous import duties. Sometimes the price tag is the prestige factor perhaps.

Man, I do feel bad for those folks but angry with the Ontario gov'ts constant 1 trick horse mentality. Ontario has soooo much of just about everything and yet most goes under-developed or undeveloped. Now, how can the Premier look these folks in the eye? Oh, he'll blame the PM, the CPC, Quebec, the US, space aliens and anyone else but his own inabilities but, at the end of the day these guys and gals will still be out of work. And then there's GM, just lovely isn't it that one of the worlds largest Companies and the 80 pound heads that work there with all the MBAs did not see it coming?
