BRIDGEWATER, N.S. – The mother of Karissa Boudreau, the 12-year-old Nova Scotia girl whose frozen body was found on a riverbank near Bridgewater in February, has been charged with the premeditated killing of her only child.
Police said today they arrested Penny Boudreau in Halifax on Friday and later charged her with first-degree murder.
The 33-year-old woman reported Karissa missing late on the afternoon of Jan. 27, as a snowstorm descended on the region.
Penny Boudreau told police she had argued with her daughter that day as they drove to a supermarket in Bridgewater, a town of 8,000 near Nova Scotia's South Shore.
Boudreau said she went into the store, leaving the girl in a car.
When she returned, she told investigators, Karissa was gone.
Two days after she reported her daughter missing, Boudreau appealed to the public for help at an emotional news conference.
Her eyes are swollen from crying, her face is pale and drawn, she said: "I'm trying not to think the worst. It's plain and simple hell. Not knowing where your kids are is horrible."
Karissa, a Grade 6 student at Bridgewater Elementary School, was described as a typical 12-year-old, who loved singing along to Hilary Duff and the Spice Girls CDs while dancing in her room.
Police said they were worried for the girl because she wasn't prepared for the cold weather, wearing only a black hoodie, black vest, blue jeans and pink Crocs.
The girl's body was found Feb. 9 by a passerby who spotted human remains partially covered in snow on a steep bank of the LaHave River just south of the town.
An autopsy revealed how the girl died, but police have not released details.
Within weeks of her death, police said they had questioned two people known to Karissa, but they were later released without charges.
