Yea, that was a pretty vicious hit, and the kind of crap Laraque does that made him not worth keeping here in Edmonton. He's a great guy off the ice, does a lot of community work, but that's not what we paid him for.

Man I don’t know which is a bigger cheap shot, the hit or this comment.

Georges isn’t known around the NHL as a cheap shot artist and no that’s not why the Oilers wouldn’t resign him. Laraque got it in his head that he was a finesse player and stopped being an enforcer and when a player like that no longer wants to drop the gloves to stick up for a team mate, well then it’s time to set him free. The same reason the Coyotes traded him.
I don’t call that a vicious hit, but it was a hit on a player in vulnerable position and Georges will have to pay the price now. He needs to remember that sometimes he’s playing with little boys out there and can’t hit them the same way he’d hit someone his own size. Now we sit back and wait for Campbell to spin the NHL Wheel of Punishment and see what it lands on.

Perhaps my characterization of Laraque was short and unfair. I just remember a similar incident in his last days with us.

That's exactly what it looks like - he got pushed by Laraque, but there was no hit.

In no way am I condoning what Laraque did - Downie was in a relatively vulnerable position and shouldn't have even touched him. If Kovalchuck is any comparison, Laraque might get 1 game.

BUT - how does this push any different than the ones we see all the time when 2 guys are skating as fast as they can to try to get to the puck first to beat the icing? The players push each other, both of them in a very vulnerable position and it doesn't take much for what happened last night to happen during a touch-icing (I hate that stupid rule!). Anyway...

I disagree - vicious is Downie on McAmmond, Domi on Neidermayer, Hunter on Turgeon, Pronger on too-many-to-count!! This was a very sloppy play by Laraque, who took it on someone who wasn't in the greatest of position... And he deserved to get a game misconduct..

He can probably expect more of the same, since his reputation preceedes him and other players aren't going to hold up on him anymore. I guess he'll reap what he sowed.

"Payback is a bitch" isn't it Downey? [hockey]
