Not really a story in my mind....I would have shot them also....

I see the fault squarly on the owners of the dog, not the farmer who was protecting his livestock...

Probably not because the people from PETA are the ones who would get their knickers in a twist.

hmmm (treading carefully) The Farmer was within his right unfortunately and he could have tried to see if they were friendly and looked at their tags "first" and called animal control" - probably didn't notice they were wearing tags from afar and only noticed the minor commotion with his animals, should he have "noticed" that they were friendly critters and not as yet done any harm to his stock, he had options - but in rural areas, it is common for wild dogs to venture into farmsteads, it is also common for people to abandon animals near farms with the thought that "a farmer could make use of them" and even abandoned animals get hungry and will attack just for something to eat. The dogs were probably off exploring, especiually being urban critters, so many smells and sights to explore in their freedom romp - however, how was the farmer to know that these were urban companion animals? It is stated in the article that he did have an option as the dogs did not harm his livestock (no where does it say it was cattle) - I wrote an article about something similar and why farmers shoot unrecognized dogs...

Incorrect.

$1:
The dogs were in his livestock's feeding area, putting the animals in a "panic state," said Insp. Bruce Townley of Durham Region police.

Inducing panic in the cattle indicates to me that the dogs were either chasing the cattle or scaring the cattle by their mere presence. That's harm enough. Having 1,000Kg critters running around in a panic is never a good thing.

The farmer was under no obligation to wait for any further harm to occur before putting an end to the threat to his herd.

There was some dogs that were got out near my aunt and uncle's farm. If they came after the horses they would have been killed. Most likely by the horses  But if a dog every went after them in the paddocks, then no doubt I, my sister, my aunt, my uncle or anyone else would kill the dog.

One dog is a dog. 2 or more is a pack. Dogs that pack cause trouble.
