No kidding,should be all white in a week or so,just polar bears wandering around. They do have a nice museum though.

ziggy...Haven't been there in quite a while but had a very interesting rail ride up there. Talk about being able to walk beside the train. Lots of history up there. Some of our American posters have no idea how old the actual port is or that the United States actually built the airstrip up there. I guess the same goes for some other northern Manitoba communities. The Pas airport was built by the US Airforce for Bomber command...

Ya it's pretty awesome,all our barges come from that port,I get stuck there regularily on my way to and from work.

Yes, this is the start of something, but it could be something positive. We could use this to develop closer economic ties with a country that will be rapidly out of debt, and full of consumers ready to spend their hard-earned rubles and Euros.

If this situation is managed correctly, it can be an economic boon to Manitoba and even to the neighbouring provinces and territories of Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nunuvit.

And with more physical traffic up north, more money coming from that traffic and therefore, more tax revenue... well hell, even the Liberal's would be hard pressed to pull their hands out of THAT cookie jar.

kevlarman...I totally agree. The port of Churchill has been basically ignored by all governments and now with the new equipment that can clear ice it's true potential might be realized. There is so little grain being shipped out of there that at times one would think that the feds would rather support Ontario ports or BC ports...(sarcasm and disgust intended).

I've never been to Churchill and I recall seeing "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming!" when I was a wee lad and the movie gave me a big warm fuzzy for the Russians.

Then I grew up and joined the real world where Russia is back to being a not-so-friendly power.

If the Russians are setting up shop in Churchill I will guaran-damn-tee you that they have more on their minds then making nice with selling fertilizer to you.

If the Russians are setting up shop in Churchill I will guaran-damn-tee you that they have more on their minds then making nice with selling fertilizer to you.

If the Russians are smart they would realize the only importance that port has to them is shipping good's and only untill late october,the last barges for Nunavut leave there in late september.I dont remember seeing any ice breakers on the hudsons bay either on my half a dozen trips over it this year.Thats not a nice place in the winter.
