Anybody else remember when Acapulco used to be the preeminent tourist destination in Mexico? To bad that mantle ended around the time Elvis was making his movie there.

Now all you get are shootouts in hotel lobby's, drugs and murder. Last time I was there in the 90's on our way to South America you couldn't go in the water at the beach because of contamination and the hotels sat empty because of the pollution, drug wars and an atmosphere of hate for non Mexicans. The place even managed to become Mexico's tourist destination for awhile but they even managed to fuck that up because when your guests be they Mexican or not start getting shot in hotel lobby's it puts a bit of damper on the tourist industry.

Hopefully this is the first step in cleaning the place up and bringing it back to what it once was.

They'll need more than a can of fabreeze to clean the stench of corruption out of Mexico.

It's gonna be a long hard road because when you consider Acapulco was Disneyland compared to places like Ciadad Juarez you realize just how hard it'll be.

Mexico should concentrate on reducing violence and ignore drug exports as much as possible. They are going to happen anyway so why kill each other?

The best way for Mexico to reduce violence is to restore the right to keep and bear arms so the people can defend themselves from the criminals AND the police (who also criminals).

A few of their towns are so bad that after the police abandoned them volunteer militias have formed, armed themselves with illegal weapons, and reduced the crime rate by hunting down and killing politically connected criminals.

Their government is incapable of fixing the crime problem. It's up to the people and the government needs to get out of the way.

How blatantly corrupt do you have to be to have the Federales come in and shut you down at gunpoint? 8O

Let's just hope that the Federales didn't go into Acapulco just to shut down the competition. :|

There was a documentary on Netflix about that exact topic. It was about a Dr. and his friends who went around arming and training militia's to defend their towns and villages. Amazingly enough they actually cleaned up a bunch of these places from the death grip of drug soldiers and the police.

I'll try to find the link or name and post it.

But what I can't figure out is why the hell would you terrorize your support base because in cases like this these cartels could be getting support and aid from these people instead of turning them off.

That's a distinct possibility given that the only real reliable force in Mexico seems to be the Mexican Military and even then, some of them are sketchy.

It's what authoritarians do because they always think they're right or that they have the power.

And so long as no one stands up to them and shoots them or slits their throats then they'll just keep at it.
