BSL is required as the public isn't equipped to handle this breed.

$1:
Witnesses say the dog had no prior history of aggression.

A dog has "no prior history of aggression" until his first aggression. :?

Hey look, it was a pit bull. Around Sacramento we call them 'The Dog of Peace' because we keep hearing how wonderful and loving they are despite one attack after another where the fuckers maul a child or otherwise unexpectedly attack someone.

Actually, it was described as a 'pit bull cross', which, there is no such thing. So what it probably is the typical media descriptor for a bad dog. Like how accurate they are on 'assault rifles'.

Short hand for "American Pit Bull Terrier Cross"? Semantics?

Every time one of these events happen, my facebook feed explodes with empathy for the fucking dog. Or breed. Not so much for the victims.

Society is messed up.

Not trying to apologize for the dog. Just putting blame where it is due. Quite a few incidents are blamed on 'pit bulls', when many aren't. And unlike human killers, no one corrects the misinformation, so a reputation that is not deserved is earned.

$1:
RCMP said the boxer-pitbull cross initially attacked a toddler, leaving her with serious but not life-threatening injuries, before turning on the woman.

Veterinarians and breeders can't reliably tell what a 'pit bull' is, how do we expect a cop to?

As with any article like this there is more to the story than what is being reported.

How sad though for the family of this woman and the child involved. :(

"It's absolutely devastating," said Logan of the incident that occurred at a rural property near Langdon Saturday evening.

But she said any move toward a ban of certain breeds would be a mistake.

"Any dog of any breed, any age, any mix can have behavioural issues," she said.
What sparked the dog's 'extreme reaction'?

She wants to know what sparked "an extreme reaction" on the part of the boxer-pitbull cross.

Dr. Logan said the dog's medical and vaccination history and its genetic makeup could be key to better understand the reason behind the attack.

She said the dog may have suffered from a mental illness or some other condition that triggered the incident and suggested a breed-specific ban as the answer would be inappropriate.

And Logan bristles at any suggestion that the owner — the victim in this case — may be to blame for the dog's behaviour.

She said in her 18 years as a veterinarian, only five cases involved the owners being responsible for their dog's aggressive behaviour.

Logan suggests it may be time to consider regulatory or stricter controls for breeders.

"It would be great if we could have open dialogue between everybody, breeders, vets, it would be great if we could have more control over who's breeding what," she said.

Any dog can be aggressive but some breeds have a much greater propensity for dangerous behaviour. The data on bites does not necessarily capture the full picture as pit bull-type injuries are usually more serious than a nip from a toy poodle. If you breed a dog to retrieve or herd, that's what it will do. Ditto fighting.

Pitbulls are a mix of several different pure breed dogs, and were bred to fight actual Bulls.

They shouldn't be left with children, and guard dogs are not family members. Dogs aren't sentient enough to pull double duty like that.
