Diageo, Mars, Hewlett-Packard, Deutsche Bank and Mondelez were among brands to pull advertising from YouTube and its owner Google after campaigns appeared alongside videos featuring children and sexualised comments.
Lidl, the German supermarket chain, said it was shocked and disturbed by the revelations that explicit comments had not been removed from videos of young children by Googles video-sharing site.
It added that the revelations were completely unacceptable and showed that the strict policies which Google has assured us were in place to tackle offensive content are ineffective.
Mars removed its ads from both YouTube and Google ahead of one of the busiest shopping days of the year on Black Friday, after details of the videos emerged. We are shocked and appalled to see that our adverts have appeared alongside such exploitative and inappropriate content, Mars said in a statement.
The videos and the explicit comments were first revealed following investigations by the BBC and the Times newspaper.
Mondelez, Diageo, TalkTalk, Adidas, BT, Sky and the broadcasters Now TV service also pulled ads from YouTube. Other advertisers criticised Google for failing to identify inappropriate videos following a similar controversy earlier this year.
HP suspended all advertising on YouTube, saying Google had wrongly classified its content. We are deeply troubled to learn that one of our advertisements was placed in a terrible and inappropriate context, it said. This appears to be the result of a content misclassification by Google.

So, if you have a gun, or a conservative viewpoint, you get whacked immediately.
But a pedo channel like Toy Freaks with 8.5 million subs, oh that's fine, no problem.
You tube just ignores stuff like this.
I wonder why.

I wonder why. It's not just conservatives. Tech review channels, and general vloggers that have no real political affiliation are also being demonetized. I'm not saying some targeting isn't happening, but the right aren't the only ones being affected.

You Tube seems bent on destroying their own monopoly. With so many people being banned and etc. from the platform they're opening the door to some serious competition.

That they are, but it could also be at the point facebook is. There have been alternatives to facebook, but none of them have really been picked up because people are so deep into the ecosystem. People are instead transitioning to a donation style of funding through patreon, instead of relying on ads.

I guess that's the thing is that people have been complacent about Facebook and YT but now it seems that Facebook and YT are doing their best to disturb that complacency. They mistakenly believe that they have a monolithic monopoly and just like MySpace before them they are all too easily erased and forgotten.

It'll only be for a period of time to make a statement. It's the largest search engine in the World, they won't pass on that audience forever.

Facebook also has twice the number of unique vistors each month that Myspace ever did. Youtube has almost 10 times what facebook does. I think you over estimate how much people will be willing to change from what they know. Unless something comes out that is crazily better (faster, less data, better quality etc.) they won't change.
