INNISFAIL, Alta. - The Mounties say they are training dogs to detect the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl, and they say the training has already paid off.

The RCMP says one of the three dog teams presently trained has already intercepted 12,000 tablets in B.C.

The training of all 139 RCMP narcotics profile dog teams across Canada is expected to be completed by mid-July at it's centre in Innisfail, Alta.

The RCMP says it has transformed pure fentanyl into a diluted liquid form, enabling the dogs to train with the real smell of fentanyl with no risk of inhaling it.

Fentanyl is an opioid about 100 times more toxic than morphine which can cause serious harm, including death.

Police are warning drug users that dealers also use it in tablets made to look like prescription drugs or cut other drugs such as cocaine and heroin with fentanyl.

We are in an awful dilemma. The more we fight heroin imports, the more the dealers will go to fentanyl and the super-fentanyls, causing more deaths.

It would be nice to get some cooperation from the Chinese to close the fentanyl factories over there.

They should have skipped the trafficking charge and gone straight to "manslaughter" then sentenced the fuckwad to life in prison.

That would send the message that killing people for profit is frowned upon and maybe just maybe the other death dealers would take a second glance at what they're mixing in their euphoria cocktails

Obviously, the criminals and Chinese factories are at fault but we have to ask, why are Canadians so keen on this drug? To answer that we have to look at the OxyContin disaster, created by doctors and the pharmaceutical industry, and how our culture puts such a high premium on avoiding any pain. We now have a significantly bigger problem with deaths due to opioids, legal and otherwise, than the British do.

And here in BC we have a bunch of idiots taking people off of their prescription pain killers with no alternatives while claiming that they're helping stop the fentanyl epidemic.

British Columbia’s physician regulatory college has unveiled the first mandatory standards in Canada for prescribing opioids, formally acknowledging the role played by doctors in creating the country’s epidemic of painkiller abuse.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. adopted the new standards in response to “inappropriate” prescribing by doctors and a spike in the number of fatal overdoses linked to illicit fentanyl, deputy registrar Ailve McNestry said in an interview.

“The confluence of those two things has given us the impetus to go forward,” Dr. McNestry said.

And while I applaud their admission of guilt for creating the problem I still wonder where these twits think people in pain will turn for relief when they can't get it from their doctor? With decisions like this you can expect to see alot more fentanyl deaths from people who otherwise would have been taken care of by the health care system.

The withdrawal of OxyContin was another unnecessary disaster. The docs were concerned about protecting themselves. They took decades to get patients into this predicament and now they want people to get religion in a few months.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a class action suit over OxyContin prescribing. Massive harm has been caused.
