I am not a huge fan of open carry in urban settings. It just leads to confusion, scared people and wastes everyone's time.

I am still on the fence over concealed carry but I am more in favour of hidden firearms than in plain sight. Texas was one of the last states to get an open carry law (I know, people think Texas has had one for years, but that just isn't true).

The more I hear about all this crap in the USA, the more I think that really only ex police and military should get CCW permits, or the civilian course needs to be significantly more robust. I took the Texas CCW course years ago when I was living down there, it really was a joke, and did not make me feel like there were qualified people carrying handguns all over the state. And yes, I am a huge gun lover, but I also have reason and common sense!

I think that if it's a right, then it's no different than exercising the right of 'free speech' in an urban setting. Sure, to us it's worrying to see someone carrying a rifle through downtown, but it's also legal here. (To a degree.) Just it happens so infrequently that it's unusual and perhaps scary.

But people have been taking rifles to Walmart for years in the US. It might get people excited, but shouldn't be that scary any more.

I'm kind of on the fence too. Open carry has the advantage of nothing being hidden, but also can seem confrontational. Conceal carry seems less confrontational, but also slightly more menacing.

It's OK as long as it's not a BB gun. Then it's scary, gets reported to police and the guy gets himself shot. Of course the victim was suffering from excessive melanin, so it's no wonder. They should really re-write the laws to allow open carry only for white people.

Fuck 'em! They're supposed to enforce and obey the laws that the people authorize and if they don't like it then turn in your fucking badges and find another fucking job.

What else is it that cops don't like?

They don't like it when people video record their misbehavior even though that's also a protected right.

They don't like it when they stop someone and demand ID and the citizen first asks them what's their probable cause for asking for ID.

They don't like it when they beat someone up and that person files a complaint about it.

They don't like it when they steal money from people at gunpoint in the abuse of asset forfeiture laws and the people come back and sue their asses.

They don't like it when they come up on people who aren't intimidated by some shaved-head, roid-raging anger-monkey with a badge and a gun.

And they have the utter gall to swear an oath to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States from all enemies, foreign and domestic only to hold that very same Constitution in contempt.

Seriously, any cop who can't do their job and respect the rights of the people - no matter how hard that makes the job - needs to fuck off and get out of the way for someone who CAN do the job.

I accept it as a right if some states see it as such. In reality it has less to do with public safety or being there as the "good guy" if a criminal tries to hurt someone in front of you and more to do with just sticking some faux rebel thumb in the eyes of the squishes and the cops. No one with any historical knowledge would ever mistake these guys for the colonial militia or Sam Houston's boys. It's really just doing something because you can without ever having that important internal adult conversation with yourself as to whether or not you should. Handguns? Sure, because if crime does erupt in front of you you do have the potential to stop it, as unlikely as that scenario really is. Walking through Walmart with a Barrett 50-cal though? That's just plain stupid, like the bozo who puts $50K worth of obnoxious lift kits, mega-tires, and nitrous oxide systems into a $25K pickup truck. "Look at me! Look at me!" is all it comes down to, basically just childish narcissism.

It will be a real eye opener when the cops or security forces shoot one of these "heroes" during an event because they were perceived as a threat in the split second the cop has to make a decision.

It's not a rally, it's a riot, since it involved black people. And since the "heroes" were all black, being shot by cops wouldn't really be a standout event, just another day in America.
