The guy should've been tried and convicted already. 3 years pre-trial detention is unreasonable

I quite agree. The dirty little secret of Canadian Justice is that many people in jail have not been convicted of any crimes. They are awaiting hearings, and haven't had bail hearings or haven't been able to meet minimal bail requirements. Usually for minor, non-violent stuff.

That ties the jails up, and the courts. Stronger funding of Legal Aid, and more bail courts would get a lot of non violent people out of jail and the ones that should be there would be easier to manage.

Funny, because how often do we hear of somebody charged with a serious crime out on bail with minimal conditions or even on their own recognizance.

What really needs to change the is the speed of our court process. Look at England that was able to try their rioters toute suite, while it took us years to process the Vancouver rioters. That's just an example. Justice delayed is justice denied. We have no excuse for our court systems being so plugged up. If people were assured of a speedy trial, maybe judges would be less inclined to grant bail to people who really shouldn't have it.

Perception of media reports is not reflected in reality.

This guy should certainly have not been granted bail:
$1:
The 27-year-old was accused of choking and sexually assaulting five women and an attempted attack on a sixth in a series of sexual assaults that dated back to 2012. Some of the attacks occurred in the victim’s homes. Police released two composite sketches in connection with three assaults linked by DNA and video surveillance footage from an apartment building on Draper Avenue.

Hussein was charged after he voluntarily provided police with a DNA sample that they matched to the ones collected from the crime scenes.

Hussein hadn’t sought his release on bail – he’s currently the subject of a deportation order as he was not legally permitted to be in Canada at the time of the alleged offences. Hussein was a Jordanian national who was in Canada on an expired student visa.

But he should have been given a much speedier trial. Don't know if that would have stopped him killing himself, since a conviction seems very likely - not sure being in jail after being found guilty is any different than being in jail beforehand.

Exaclty. I never said he should be granted bail, I said there are a lot of people in prisons that haven't been convicted of anything, and are charged with non-violent offenses. Like Jaywalking. 8O

DrCaleb DrCaleb:

I think we're ahead of you there - we do use ICBC to collect fines, haven't heard about anybody being put in jail.

Probably. We've had 40 years of governments who just had to hit all the party talking points in order to get re-elected. Innovation wasn't big on the list.

Yousef Mohammed Hussein.

Gee, what ever gave him that idea that raping infidel women was the thing to do?

Where he committed suicide I suppose we'll never know.

The guy should have been tried by now. Seems to me the prosecutor was dragging his or her feet.
