Nope. But we don't follow the Quran for our laws. I suggest we offer him a one way ticket to Saudi Arabia, which does.

The goddam Saudis will welcome him as a hero.

The Saudis are not our friends.

In Palestine, if you can pressure the enemy into releasing you from time you're serving as a terrorist, you get cake.

What if we let this guy out and he refuses to leave unless he gets cake? :(

If he wanted to be tried by the laws of the Qur'an then he should have committed a crime somewhere where they follow that. Instead we will feed and house him and allow him all sorts of "rights" and pay for him to live for years... unless it is decided that he had a bad start in life and it really wasn't his fault that he got in with a bad crowd. They made him do it cause...

 I can't even type that with a straight face.

Good, since it's just typical rightie tightie bullshit. He's been tried and convicted. His appeal to be tried under the Koran is just a lawyer make work project, in fact I can't understand a lawyer ethically taking it on. It could be decided that the judge made an error in law, but that's very unlikely. But I know, lets get our knickers in a knot about nothing. Because Islam.

Costs for appeals should be borne by those appealing, or by their lawyers.
That will reduce the amount of dumb bullshit like this;
which everyone has to pay for.

Well, no. Then you just have the rich being able to afford it while the poor are farked. But just as with nuisance lawsuits, appeals that are bullshit should be quickly denied, such as the Koran one. Maybe this is good tho, in that the appeal will make law that asking to be tried under the Koran isn't on. I wonder what sort of book the flying spaghetti people have? Or the Church of beer - trial by beer pong.

My knickers are not in a knot... Just saying it's a crock and it costs us all money.

If you want I will ask my kid if he knows where his copy of the flying spaghetti monster book is. I could look it up for you...

Make it so that if you appeal and it is found your appeal was not justified, then your lawyer pays.

Doubt that would work either. Just be quick to dismiss bullshit suits. But IMO, it's worth paying the price to make sure people have access to justice, even if it leads to some bullshit like this. Better than the alternative.

Maybe we also have to remember that this is a Sun article, and the Koran part is just a small part of the appeal, not the heart of it.

Of course his appeal is going to fail. There are no grounds for anyone to be tried according to religious scrpiture.

The sun of course leaves out a fact (shocker): although it mentions that his lawyers were court-appointed, anyone following the news story would recall that this guy initially represented himself, that he tried made the same defence about only being eligible to be tried by the quran, and that he failed.

The lawyers were court appointed during sentencing after his behaviour became more bizarre and he was deemed to likely suffer from schizophrenia, although still fit for trial.

This is a non-story.
