Nice rresort. Sounds more like a jumping in ceremony for the Shining Path Guerilla`s than a shamanic healing retreat.
Lots of people doing this down there, most goes off without a hitch and people say it helped them immensely. But when you're dealing with powerful drugs things can go wrong. Nothing in the story says this place was any worse than all the other ones. But if you want to get all bent about ayahuasca, how many booze fests have ended in violence?
