I gave a dealership a bad review after I filed a complaint with AMVIC, the dealership didn't like the review and filed a complaint against me.

I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee that had over $1000 damage and the dealership wasn't honest with me about it.

Ouch, was it due to an accident? AMVIC standards are a little more tough than Ontario.

The damage was done on the lot, when I asked the sales department for all records of the Jeep PDI etc it was provided except of course the internal repair order for the damage and when they were called on it they said it must have been misplaced.

I filed a complaint with AMVIC and gave the dealership an online review when they read it they weren't happy and filed a complaint against me. Eventually the outcome was they didn't admit to doing anything wrong but paid a compensation fee as per AMVIC.

I worked at a Chrysler dealership for a very short time. It was a 5 star dealer but when it came to their used vehicles, eeek.

Had one guy looking for a used, hunter green Ram 1500 with towing package and bed capper. Amazingly, 1 came in a few days later so I called buddy up and told him the exact vehicle he was looking for was in. He came in that day and signed the papers.
At the end of the day the used car manager told me I did a great job. The truck had been fished out of the Grand River, something I did NOT know about until that moment.
Had another couple that were looking for a used '99 4 door Dakota but would settle for a club cab. We had a white club cab on the lot and I showed it to them. There were a few small dents in it and I explained that it had been a work truck. They wanted to talk about it and left. After they left the manager told me not to tell anyone but it was actually a '97, '98 and '99 Dakota. The truck had been in a rollover and the only thing on it that was '99 was the frame. The bed was from a '97 and the cab was from a '98. It had been freshly painted in the dealer shop and the manager then took it home, took it to the gravel quarry he lived near, loaded up the bed with a bit of gravel and then drove around a bit to scuff and scrape the paint in the bed so it didn't look like a fresh, new paint job.

That was the day I quit.

Any reputable used car dealer provides the new buyer with a CarProof or similar report as part of the standard procedure.

Especially in today's era with social media and online reviews, the shady used car lots usually end up out of business fairly quick.

Yeah, but this at was a 5 star Chrysler dealership, not some dumpy little back lot used car dealer.

"Reputable" there is the key. The way to avoid getting a bad reputation nowadays is to sell cars on Kajiji or some place, and pretend to be just another person. A friend almost got burned by a Hurricane salvage car by one of those guys.

It's funny too, I'm seeing a lot of fairly new vehicles on the side of the road lately. I wonder how many of those were 'written off' in US hurricanes last season then refurbed and sold in the Great White North by 'just another guy'.

"5 Star" meant nothing, especially to the average consumer. Just like GM's "Optimum Certified" program, it's an internal certification on hopes to brand themselves as a higher-status dealer.

The 5 Star designation came purely from customer surveys and was scrapped in 2010 for the new Dealer Standards program.

'Curbsiders' have always been around....and it's illegal.

Highly unlikely. It's hard to get a salvage vehicle over the border to make it financially viable.

Well, let me tell you a little true story. Just before I met my wife, she was working as an independent contractor for GM. Her job was to do quality control checks on the vehicles sitting in a lot across from the GM plant. They did the job outside, at night, regardless of the weather. My wife, bless her heart, knows SFA about cars and trucks other than they need gas to make them go. Yet she was the kind of person GM hired on for these quality control inspections.

Now imagine people who are unqualified for that kind of inspection process doing that job in the dead of winter, at night when it's 10-15 below.
