The problem is with how they communicated it. "Register Your Camera" sounds like Big Brother.

What they should have done is said "sign up now to be a volunteer neighbourhood watch special surveillance deputy!!" And then pepole who sign up get a special bumper sticker or special hat and whistle or something. They would had plenty of takers.

From what I was told this actually worked to catch someone. It was something like a B&E to car or house. Beat cop saw that the neighbour had a camera outside his house pointed at the driveway. Cops went over and asked if he had recorded video. Turns out he did and it showed the thieves quite clearly while they were checking his car out. The light bulb went on and they thought it would be a great neighbourhood watch 24/7.
They just want to know who to call if they need information within a certain radius coming and going.

The same thing came up in Sacramento.

The downside of this is that if law enforcement does something they don't want captured on video they'll know you have this kind of system and they will in all probability do everything in their power to obtain your video.

I am not registering my video system but if I see a crime I'll be happy to volunteer the video as evidence. But I'm not agreeing in advance to turn over all my video whenever asked and I am certainly not agreeing to registering my system so the rogue cops can know where to go to suppress evidence.

Public_Domain Public_Domain:
Why register? As if they won't ask for your video if your camera clearly points at the crime scene? What real benefit? So they can e-mail instead of knock?

Because they won't otherwise know where all the cameras are. They're not always easy to spot.

Hopefully the people close to your street don't feel the same way when something happens to your property.

Irrelevant. I have my own video surveillance system and anything that happens at my place is streamed live to a webserver. I'm covered and I'm not trying to police the whole neighborhood.

Now you're being absurd.

Unless of course you're proposing that I should aim cameras at my neighbor's houses?

Not at all. I would never suggest you look out for the good of your neighborhood.

It doesn't occur to you that not everyone in the world wants to be under video scrutiny? Would you want your neighbors watching your house on video all the time?

Hmmm?

Oh please. This has nothing to do with pointing your cameras at anything else but your own property. This has to do with your hatred of police.

Does this apply to dash cams, as well?
