I have said before;

There isn't enough money for me to teach in Canada.

Everyone has the right to an education, but not everyone has the right to be in a public school if they pose a threat to staff and students.

We've just set up a couple mobiles for transition classes. These are classes that deal with problem students, who don't know how to act in class. It's a difficult process when the majority of your students suffer from varying degrees of FASD, come from dysfunctional families where abuse is common and the parents lack proper coping skills due to multi-generational consanguinity issues and FASD. Then there is the corruption of the idea of 'empowering' students that is prevalent in many well meaning but out of touch educational 'experts'.

Add to that the general bitterness that gets passed on to the younger generation and the view that education does not matter in a future on the 'rez doing... well, not much, for the majority. One of the things I hear around here is that many families do not want to see their youth leave to further their education for fear they may discover a new world out there and not want to come back. A young girl I know is hopefully going to prove to be an exception as she has the opportunity before her to go to university this fall on a 4-year scholarship to do something with her life. She's smart and has a good head on her shoulders and could do very well and perhaps return to do something for her own community.

It's a very challenging job you have Shep, under difficult circumstances at most times. I know a few of the teachers around here and can understand how frustrating it must be.
