I am looking out my window at one right now that's full of kids playing shinny. Despite living in Southern Ontario and having our rink about 1000 metres from Lake Ontario, our neighborhood still manages to have a decent little outdoor rink that lasts a couple of months every year. The dads take turns as "hosers", watering the rink at 3:00 AM on frozen mornings. In most places, they have gone to indoor rinks to keep predictable schedules.

I suppose that it's possible but pretty much all of our neighbors are what I would describe as " old fashioned Canadians" ... and the currnt craze for goofy lawsuits did not originate with that group.

This has been going for years now. We live in a very neighborly neighborhood with a good neighborhood association. It's surprisingly old fashioned, which is why I choose to raise my kids, here. No gangs to be seen ...not very Yuppie, either. They are both a blight on our fair land.

I don't know about other cities or the climate change thing but Saskatoon operates, through the neighbourhood associations over 40 outdoor rinks. There is one within 2 or so Km of my house. My youngest son's girlfriend's 12 year old son spent a Saturday helping build the one a block from their house. Camico, the mining company builds one next to the Bessbourgh, along with a warming hut with a wood fireplace and a youngster who rents skates, helmets and sells hot chocolate . It's quite popular, and apparently frequented by teens out on a cheap date.
