Hunters will be allowed to use shotguns and rifles, weapons normally prohibited in deer hunting in southern Ontario.

Geesh, just because you got one bad deer, doesn't mean they're all bad. :(

I go to Pelee a lot. It is an exceptionally fragile, little oasis. The deer population around here has totallty exploded as there are few four legged predators about and that deer hunting went totally out of fashion decades ago ... A.B. "After Bambi". If they don't cull them, all that will be left alive in Pelee will be starving deer, shoulder deep.

I'd open this up as a special opportubity for bow hunters. It's the perfect place for a hunt like that.

Yeah, probably with buckshot only, no slugs allowed, as the effective range of shot is a great deal less than a single bullet.

Slugs:
Load 'em yourself

or buy 'em pre made

they work. You need to learn their range and aim points, you can use the old goose gun or buy a special slug gun.

Ontario seems to only limit shotguns to 20 ga. or larger. Pele island is, however, a bow only zone.

There are quite a few options available for shooting slugs, my solution is a Remington 1100 with a magnaported 20' slug barrel shooting Fiocchi slugs. Those slugs are damn near as accurate as a rifle within 100 yds. Otherwise it's a Remington 870 with a 20' Rem Choke slug barrel using 00 Buck through the Full choke tube.

Huh. Learned something new today. That's the first I've heard of large game being hunted with shotguns. I don't hear of that here. Shotguns are for geese and ducks in these parts. Maybe the odd, unfortunate intruder.

It's legal to hunt both deer and black bear in BC using a shotgun, using either slugs or buckshot.

No kidding... Huh. I don't think that's something I'd ever do, but to each his own.

You can get Fiocchi slugs? I have asked for them and only get blank stares, I make my own slugs and carry a few when shot gunning. Never had to use them but just in case a nasty bear gets aggressive or a moose walks up to the blind.

Don't know these days, I bought 10-12 boxes of them years ago. You may want to try checking out some mail order places like Cabelas or Wholesale sports to see what they may have.

This isn't the island, which is way off shore and well out of the range of migrating deer. This is a National Park at the tip of a long, slender peninsula that is composed mostly of beach sand deposited by a receding glacier and shaped by the action of an inland sea.
